Wat Chonprathan Rangsarit

Wat Chonprathan Rangsarit is one of Nonthaburi’s most active and well-regarded Buddhist monasteries, founded in 1959 under the guidance of the late Venerable Panyananda Bhikkhu, a prominent Thai monk and disciple of Master Buddhadasa who served as abbot here until his death in 2007. A third-class royal monastery under the Mahanikaya sect, the temple has grown into an important centre for Theravada Dhamma study and practice rather than a heritage site, and its reputation rests on the rigour of its Buddhist education programmes rather than on ancient Mon or ethnic roots.

The temple grounds are spacious and well maintained, featuring a curved stone plaza that becomes the focal point each Sunday morning at 9:00 AM when lay supporters gather for chanting, Dharma talks, and the almsgiving ceremony. A dedicated Dhamma study building — the Panyavijjalaya Institute — operates within the compound, running courses based on the Threefold Training (sīla, samādhi, paññā) for both monastics and the general public. The main prayer hall houses a principal Buddha image in traditional Thai style, and smaller shrine areas allow for quiet individual worship throughout the day.

What distinguishes this temple is its deliberate focus on practice over spectacle. Residents and regular visitors come specifically to study and meditate rather than for historical sightseeing, giving the compound a calm, purposeful atmosphere that many find more nourishing than the elaborate decoration of older temples nearby.

Visit on a Sunday morning to experience the full community atmosphere, arriving by 8:45 AM to find a seat before the 9:00 AM programme begins. The temple is accessible by bus or taxi from Mo Chit BTS station to Pak Kret along Tiwanon Road. Dress modestly with covered shoulders and knees, remove shoes before entering any buildings, and maintain quiet, respectful behaviour throughout.
