Wat Pa Siri Wattana Wisut

Wat Pa Siri Wattana Wisut sits on a hilltop in Tha Tako district, Nakhon Sawan Province, built in the form of a royal barge to mark King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s 80th birthday. Construction began in 1984 under royal patronage of Princess Galyani Vadhana, and the roughly 96-rai grounds now function as a Dhammayutika Nikaya forest monastery. Entry is free, daily 08:00-17:00.

The complex’s landmark is the Sri Bodh Gaya chedi: a 28-metre stupa carved from red stone on a white base, its stepped, quadrilateral form modelled directly on the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya, India, where the Buddha is traditionally held to have attained enlightenment. A gilded, inverted-bell-shaped spire tops the structure, decorated with stucco patterns finished in gold leaf. Below it, the temple’s other buildings are arranged along the lines of a ship’s hull and deck — a deliberate layout, not a coincidence of terrain, meant to evoke a vessel carrying practitioners past worldly attachment.

Because the design leans on unusual, imported religious architecture rather than the standard Thai temple template, the visual impact is different from most rural Nakhon Sawan wats — closer to a pilgrimage landmark than a quiet neighbourhood shrine, and it draws a steady trickle of Thai visitors making the trip specifically to see the chedi.

Insider Tip: Climb to the chedi itself rather than just viewing it from the car park — the hilltop position gives an open view over the surrounding Tha Tako countryside that most photos of the temple don’t show.

Watch out: This remains an active monastery, not a monument — dress modestly (covered shoulders and knees) and keep noise down around the meditation and residential areas away from the chedi.

Wat Phra Prang Lueng, the province’s Ayutthaya-period prang beside the Chao Phraya, and the wetlands of Bueng Boraphet are both elsewhere in Nakhon Sawan if you’re building out a day beyond the temple itself.
