Wat Pho Thi Khun (Wat Huai Toei)
วัดโพธิคุณ (วัดห้วยเตย)
Wat Pho Thi Khun sits about 11 km from Mae Sot on the Tak–Mae Sot highway, near km marker 69 — most locals just call it Wat Huai Toei, after the village around it. It’s a forest meditation monastery (arañavasi tradition), where the resident monks split their time between scripture study and meditation practice rather than the parish-style role of a typical town temple.
The current halls and the main Buddha image took more than 18 years to build, set among mature trees on a wooded plot rather than the open, paved courtyards common at city wats. It’s a working monastery first — expect a quieter, more devotional atmosphere than a landmark temple geared toward visitors, with monks going about study and practice rather than a curated sightseeing circuit. The site is sometimes referenced as Wat Suan Phothiyan or Wat Aranyawasi in older records and local usage, on top of Wat Pho Thi Khun and Wat Huai Toei — all names for the same compound.
It sits roughly 500 metres from Noen Phitsawong, a hill with a viewpoint over the surrounding countryside, making it easy to combine the two on the same stop if you’re driving the Tak–Mae Sot road.
Insider Tip: Since it functions as a genuine meditation monastery rather than a photo-stop temple, keep voices low and avoid interrupting monks who are studying or in walking meditation around the grounds.
Watch out: There’s little in the way of signage in English along the highway — watch for the km 69 marker and the turn-off near Noen Phitsawong rather than expecting a prominent roadside sign.
