Wat Phra Lao Thep Nimit

Wat Phra Lao Thep Nimit sits about 2 km off Highway 2134 outside Phana, a small district town in Amnat Charoen. The wihan dates to roughly 1720, and its gilded principal Buddha image — cast in the subduing-Mara pose and known locally as Phra Lao Thep Nimit — is considered one of the more accomplished Buddha images in northeastern Thailand. Entry is free, daily 08:00–17:00.

The building started life under a different name, Wat Si Pho Chayaram Khammawadi, before locals renamed it after the Buddha image housed inside. Its roofline and proportions follow a Lao-Lanna style that spread through Isan from Vientiane workshops in the 16th and 17th centuries, though art historians think the image itself was carved later — the flame finial, facial modelling and hand posture match Isan woodcarving from the 18th and 19th centuries more closely than the earlier Lao original it replaced. Carved wooden panels line the ordination hall, and the gilding on the Buddha catches light differently through the day, brightest in the late afternoon when low sun comes through the latticed windows.

Insider Tip: Arrive before 8 AM if you want to see the morning almsround — monks from the temple walk the roads around Phana before the day’s visitors show up, and the wihan itself is quietest in that first hour. By mid-morning, local families start arriving to make merit, and the grounds fill gradually rather than crowd all at once.

Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees, shoes off before entering the wihan. There’s no set donation, though a small contribution toward upkeep is customary. Phana itself is a small crossroads town without much else to detain you, so most visitors pair the temple with a stop at Wat Tham Saeng Phet or the Phra Mongkhon Ming Mueang Buddha park elsewhere in Amnat Charoen province. Amnat Charoen town, the provincial capital, is a short drive away by car or local songthaew; travellers coming from further afield sometimes route through Ubon Ratchathani, roughly two hours’ drive to the south, since it has the nearest airport.
