Phuttha Utthayan and Phra Mongkhon Ming Mueang
พุทธอุทยาน และพระมงคลมิ่งเมือง
Phuttha Utthayan is a landscaped Buddha park on Khao Dan Phra Bat hill beside Highway 212, about 3km from Amnat Charoen town center, built around Phra Mongkhon Ming Mueang — a 20-metre gold Buddha image that’s the province’s best-known landmark. Entry is free and the grounds are open daily 08:00-17:00.
Phra Khru Thatsaprakat, abbot of Wat Mongkol Ming Mueang, initiated the project in 1960, wanting a large seated Buddha image to enshrine relics beneath its base. In 1965, sculptor and professor Chit Buabud designed a reinforced-concrete casing over the original stucco figure, finished in gold mosaic tile. The finished Buddha sits in the Maravijaya pose — the gesture of subduing Mara — measuring 11 metres across the lap and 20 metres from ground level to the tip of its flame finial, in a style showing the influence of Pala-era Indian art that reached northeastern Thailand more than a thousand years ago.
Around the main image, Phuttha Utthayan’s landscaped grounds hold smaller Buddha statues in a range of poses, set among shade trees on the hillside. Local worshippers come to make merit, light incense, and pray, while visitors more often walk the grounds at their own pace, pausing at the statues that catch their attention. The hilltop setting gives an open view back over Amnat Charoen town.
Insider Tip: Visit around 8 AM for cooler temperatures and to see monks going about their morning routine, or come back close to the 17:00 closing for softer late-afternoon light on the gold Buddha.
Watch out: Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes before entering any building, and keep your voice down — this is an active place of worship, not just a viewpoint.
The site sits on Highway 212 (the Amnat Charoen-Yasothon road), an easy tuk-tuk or songthaew ride from central Amnat Charoen town.
