Wat Somdet Phu Ruea Ming Mueang

Wat Somdet Phu Ruea Ming Mueang stands in Tambon Nong Bua, Phu Ruea district, in the hill country of Loei province — cooler and greener than the lowlands, with the ridgelines of Phu Ruea National Park visible from the temple grounds. It was founded as Wat Phra Kring Pawaret, built after royal funds were donated to purchase the land, and has since grown into one of the more distinctive temples in this part of Loei.

The ordination hall is built largely from teak in a Lan Xang-influenced style, with cedar-wood roof corners reinforced with fibre cement to keep the structure light without losing the traditional silhouette. Inside sits the temple’s principal image, known locally as Phra Kring Pawaret, said to contain relics. Alongside it is a reclining Buddha carved from jade brought in from Myanmar — an unusual material choice that draws visitors who wouldn’t otherwise detour to a district temple. Carved wooden panels line parts of the interior, and a naga figure carved from Mekong River stone stands at the entrance stairs.

Phu Ruea district sits at elevation, and mornings here run noticeably cooler than most of Thailand — worth knowing if you’re arriving straight from Bangkok heat. The temple gets a mix of local devotees and travellers routing through Phu Ruea on the way to the national park, rather than large tour groups, so it keeps an unhurried pace most of the week.
