This shared big-boat trip runs from Koh Samui to Ang Thong National Marine Park, the 42 limestone islands north-west of Samui. The day is built around the views: the climb up Koh Wua Talap and the Emerald Lake on Koh Mae Ko, with a buffet lunch on board. Hotel pickup is included. The park fee is extra and paid in cash.

Key Facts
  • Duration: 8 to 9 hours
  • Departs: Nathon Pier, with hotel pickup on Samui
  • Includes: pickup, buffet lunch on board, drinks, snorkel gear; kayaking with that option
  • Excludes: national park fee (cash)
  • Fitness: moderate, for the viewpoint climb

The Route

The crossing from Nathon takes about 75 minutes. On Koh Wua Talap, the park’s main island, a steep trail climbs past a series of viewpoints to the top, with the whole archipelago below. The round trip can take up to two hours, and you can stop at the lower viewpoints. There is also Bua Bok cave and time on the beach. After lunch on board, the boat moves to Koh Mae Ko, where a short climb leads to the platform over Thale Nai, the Emerald Lake.

Watch out: The national park usually closes for the monsoon from about 1 November to mid-December, with dates that shift with sea conditions. Check before booking a trip in that window.

Who It Suits

It suits families and anyone who gets seasick on speedboats: the big boat is slower but steadier. It is not a snorkelling trip, so pick the speedboat version if time in the water matters more.

Insider Tip: Take sports shoes, water and a small towel for the Wua Talap climb. It is short but steep, and the humidity makes it feel much longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Ang Thong park fee included?
No. The national park fee is paid in cash on the day.
How hard is the viewpoint climb?
Steep. The trail on Koh Wua Talap passes several viewpoints on the way up, so you can turn back after the first two or three. Wear sports shoes.
Is there much snorkelling?
Not much. This trip is about the viewpoints, the Emerald Lake and the scenery. If snorkelling matters most, the speedboat version stops at more snorkel spots.
Does the park close in the monsoon?
Yes, usually from about 1 November to mid-December, with dates that move with sea conditions.
Why choose the big boat over a speedboat?
The big boat is slower but steadier in a swell, has space to move around and serves lunch on board. The speedboat is quicker and stops at more snorkel spots.
