Chiang Mai - Doi Suthep, Wat Chedi Luang & Wat Pha Lat
Highlights
- Wat Phra That Doi Suthep
- Wat Chedi Luang in the old city
- Forest temple Wat Pha Lat
- English-speaking guide
- Admission fees and packaged water included
Three temples make up this half-day loop, each showing a different side of Chiang Mai’s religious history: Wat Phra That Doi Suthep on the mountain above the city, the forest temple Wat Pha Lat partway down the same route, and Wat Chedi Luang in the old city. Admission is included at Doi Suthep and Chedi Luang; Wat Pha Lat carries no separate entry fee.
Wat Pha Lat is the quieter of the three, built lower on the mountain than Doi Suthep, beside a stream with a run of small waterfalls — a spot suited to a slow walk rather than a rushed photo stop. Wat Chedi Luang carries more history than its current form suggests: the pagoda once stood 280 feet tall, was partly toppled by an earthquake in 1545, and briefly housed the Emerald Buddha before it moved on to Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew. A carved naga staircase still runs up to the chapel’s front porch.
The guide works in German, English, French, or Spanish, with pickup from Duang Tawan Hotel on Loi Kroh Road or from any hotel within Chiang Mai’s Old City or a 2 km radius. Groups top out at 15 people, and the full route — Doi Suthep, Wat Pha Lat, Wat Chedi Luang, plus transfers — takes 4 to 5 hours.

Insider Tip: Doi Suthep gets tour buses through mid-morning. If one is working through the complex when you arrive, hang back for a few minutes rather than pushing past — the crowd clears fast and the temple is worth the wait.

It is a tremendous temple complex with a visual delight every time you turn your head. It is popular with the tour buses, but wait for the tour to move on and enjoy it. Give yourself plenty of time and you will not be disappointed.
This temple is the ancient precursor (lower on the mountain) than Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. While a little less grand than it's younger sibling, it is steep with history, reverence, and peace. Boasting beautiful views of the city of Chang Mai, it is built on a stream with a seried of waterfalls. A terrific place for meditation or simple reflection. Go!!
Wat Chedi Luang, this temple is the site of an enormous pagoda, originally 280 feet high, and was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1545. At one time, Wat Chedi Luang housed the revered Emerald Buddha image now enshrined in Bangkok’s Wat Phra Kaew. One of Wat Chedi Luang’s most striking architectural features is a magnificent Naga staircase adorns the chapel’s front porch.
