Chiang Rai’s three modern temples — Wat Rong Khun (white), Wat Rong Suea Ten (blue), and Baan Dam (the Black House, sometimes called the Red Temple) — are the draw for most day trips from Chiang Mai, and this 11-hour run links them with a quick stop at a roadside hot spring on the way north. Hotel pickup in Chiang Mai is included along with all entrance fees, local Thai lunch, and bottled water.

The drive from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai runs about three hours each way through the northern countryside, broken by the hot spring stop — small pool, sulphur smell, rather than a proper soaking experience, but it breaks up the drive and stretches the legs. Wat Rong Khun comes first: the ghost-white, mirror-studded temple by Chalermchai Kositpipat, instantly recognisable from the millions of Instagram photos. Wat Rong Suea Ten (the Blue Temple) follows — newer, cobalt walls, golden Buddha inside. Baan Dam, the Black House, is Thawan Duchanee’s darker counterpoint: a collection of wooden halls filled with animal skulls, hides, and unsettling art. Lunch is at a local restaurant between temple stops.

Six hours on the road is the price of a same-day Chiang Rai loop — it’s genuinely doable but long. Wear comfortable clothes, bring a layer for the air-conditioned vehicle, and dress modestly for the temples (shoulders and knees covered). An overnight in Chiang Rai is the slower alternative if you want real time at each site; the day trip covers the headlines but doesn’t leave much room for lingering. Bottled water and a professional English-speaking guide stay with the group the whole day. Morning departures start very early — expect a pre-7am pickup.

Visit the mesmerizing White Temple, known for its unique architecture covered in white plaster and mirrored glass. This stunning temple reflects beautifully in the surrounding pond, offering peace and profound Buddhist teachings through its intricate design.
