Krabi Stand-Up Paddleboard Illuminated Night Tour

Clear paddleboards lit from beneath by LED lights turn the night water into a mirror for what’s swimming in it: naturally occurring bioluminescent plankton that glows green with every paddle stroke. The tour departs at sunset from a shop on Railay Walking Street in Krabi province, reachable only by longtail boat since no road connects Railay to the mainland.

Fifteen minutes of on-beach instruction and another fifteen in the water cover the basics before the group paddles out along a sheltered stretch of coastline to wait for full darkness. Once the sky is dark enough, the LED lights beneath each board pick out the plankton, and the highlight of the tour is jumping in to swim among it: the more movement, the more it lights up. Silverfish occasionally leap nearby, though wildlife sightings vary by night. Children aged four to eight are welcome if they ride the same board or kayak as a parent or guardian.

A guide, paddleboard, life jacket, and instruction are included; gratuities are the only cost left out. Cancel at least 24 hours before departure for a full refund, and arrive 15 minutes early to sign in. Guiding is offered in Thai and English, and the tour is well reviewed.

Watch out: a reasonable fitness level matters here: each traveler paddles a solo clear SUP rather than a stable double board, and getting to Railay itself means arranging a longtail boat from Ao Nang or Krabi Town before the tour even starts.
