No.1 Chiang Mai: Advanced Downhill Mountain Biking, Suthep N.Park
Availability checked
This is the advanced version of the Doi Suthep MTB run, built around a summit start at 1,450m with a technical descent into the Mae Ping Valley. Six hours total, aimed at intermediate to advanced riders who already know how to handle a bike off-road. First aid, safety gear and a support truck are included; insurance, national park and lake fees are extra.
The air-conditioned van shuttles you and the bikes up to the summit area of Doi Suthep National Park. After a Google Earth orientation at the pro-shop, you traverse remote ridge trails at altitude with climbs between high points, so it’s not purely downhill, expect enough pedalling to keep it interesting. The main descent drops more than 1,000 metres through varied terrain (forest singletrack, fire roads, rocky sections) to Lake Huay Tueng Thao at 377m. The support truck runs with the group, carrying spares and secured storage for valuables.
Not for beginners. You should be comfortable on technical singletrack, rocky descents and managing speed on loose surfaces. Helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads are provided, light hiking shoes, padded shorts and jerseys are available from the pro-shop if you need them. Passport number is required at check-in for insurance. Lunch at a Thai restaurant is part of the day. Worth the price for riders who want a proper challenge rather than a gravity-only descent. First Aid and CPR-certified instructors, transportation by air-conditioned van or 4x4 SUV for smaller groups, and a support truck with secure storage are all included. Water and hydration pack fills are available throughout. Bring sun protection for the ridge traverse. A 4.6 rating across 58 reviews is fair, reflecting the advanced nature of the route.
