Asia Blue Scuba teaches this three-day PADI Open Water Diver course on Koh Phangan, finishing with open water dives at Sail Rock, which the operator calls the best dive site in the area.
The course has three parts. First comes knowledge development, which is online and independent study. Then you do 5 confined water dives in the on-site pool to learn basic scuba skills. Finally you make 4 open water dives at Sail Rock. The result is a lifetime PADI Open Water Diver certification, which qualifies you to dive to 18 metres anywhere in the world.
All required learning materials and dive equipment are included, with bottled water, tea and coffee. Resort transfers are free from most locations around the island. From Thong Nai Pan there is a 200 THB taxi fee each way, and there are no transfers from Hat Yuan or Hat Tien. The operator also notes that free accommodation is not included during Full Moon or peak periods, so ask what that means for your dates. The minimum age is 10, and you need good physical health and adequate swimming skills.
Insider Tip: The theory is online and self-paced, so ask Asia Blue whether you can start it before you reach the island. That leaves more of your three days for the water.
Watch out: The operator does not recommend the course for travellers with spinal injuries, poor cardiovascular health or pregnancy, and expects a moderate level of fitness. Do not fly within 24 hours of your last dive.
Not ready to commit to a course? The Discover Scuba Diving day makes two dives at Sail Rock without certification. This course suits anyone who wants a full licence on the island, though it takes three days.
