Snorkelling Trip 5 Island Tour Around Koh Tao and Koh Nang yuan
Availability checked
Shark Bay on Koh Tao’s south coast is where most snorkelling tours see green turtles and blacktip reef sharks in the same swim, and this seven-hour trip builds the day around it. Five sites in total around Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan, with a modified fishing vessel, Thai lunch with vegetarian options, and hotel transfers from Sangthong Tours.
The morning starts with a safety briefing at Sangthong Tours on Koh Tao before boarding. Nang Yuan island (the three-island sandbar) gets the first stop with reef-edge snorkelling in the shallows. Mango Bay on Koh Tao’s northwest corner follows, known for its deep visibility and coral cover. Hin Wong Bay on the east coast gives calmer water and healthier reef than the tourist side, and Aow Leuk on the south has patches of soft coral. Shark Bay is the finale, where slow-moving green turtles graze alongside small reef sharks in relatively shallow water. Snorkelling gear, life jackets, pineapple cookies, fresh fruit and water are included, plus an onboard restroom and underwater photography.
Suits all ages and swimming abilities; life jackets are included for less confident swimmers. Bring reef-safe sunscreen, a rash vest and cash for the Koh Nang Yuan private-island entrance fee (250 THB adult, 120 THB child, not included). Sea conditions roughen in the afternoon, particularly October to December. A strong option at $30 given what’s included. Pineapple cookies and fresh fruit sound like a gimmick but actually keep energy up between stops. Underwater photography is included (you get the files, not a hard-sell print package). An onboard restroom matters on a seven-hour trip and this boat has one. The 4.8 rating across 96 reviews suggests delivery is consistent.
Itinerary
Stop
Start the trip with a pickup service from your hotel lobby and get driven to Mae Haad Pier where you will meet the crew of Sangthong Tours.
Stop
Walk on the iconic beach that links the group of three islands of Koh Nangyuan together, and climb up to the viewpoint on the peak of the highest of the three islands. There are a few separate swimming areas with tropical fish, including Japanese Garden as the best snorkelling spot and others where you can just chill out and relax.
Stop
Head over to Mango Bay while enjoying a Thai style lunch on board. The bay is named after many mango trees that once grew on this part of Koh Tao in abundance. The magnificent Mango Bay shines with turquoise green and beautiful waters that are full of marine life. Due to shallows off the beach and the sandy seafloor that gives the water a beautiful turquoise green hue, Mango Bay is a go-to destination for snorkel activities.
Stop
Continue to Hin Wong Bay located on the east coast of Koh Tao surrounded by big boulders. There are several underwater pinnacles covered in fertile coral, anemones and many kinds of fish that can be seen here. The water here is incredibly clear and you may be lucky enough to see great schools of sardines being chased by hungry trevally in water less than a metre deep.
Stop
The next stop is at Aow Luek which is named for its deep, concave shape as well as the depth of the water which makes it good for snorkelling even at very low tide. Expect a stunning scenery with white sandy beach and water varying shades of blue, and Shark Island in the background.
Stop
Before returning to the pier, make a stop at Shark Bay where you can swim alongside the many blacktip reef sharks or the sea turtles that come there each day.
