Ban Khun Chang Khian

Ban Khun Chang Khian is a Hmong highland village in Mae Rim, about 30 km from central Chiang Mai, built around a Chiang Mai University agricultural research station inside Doi Suthep-Pui National Park. It’s known for one thing above all: wild Himalayan cherry trees (nang phaya suea khrong) that blossom pink from late December into late January, peaking around mid-January.

The Faculty of Agriculture’s Khun Chang Khian research station has worked this cool, high-elevation site for decades, trialling temperate crops that don’t grow in lowland Thailand — Arabica coffee, peaches, persimmons, plums, avocado, macadamia and litchi. The White Hmong community that lives here has built its farms around the same crops, selling fresh produce, jam and locally grown coffee from stalls along the village’s single road. Outside blossom season this is a quiet coffee-and-farm-tour stop; during it, the road up the mountain gets crowded with Thai day-trippers chasing the pink canopy.

Insider Tip: Weekday mornings during blossom season beat weekends by a wide margin — the narrow mountain road bottlenecks badly on Saturday and Sunday, and parking near the viewpoints fills before 9 AM.

Watch out: Outside the December-to-January window there is no blossom here at all. A search for “cherry blossom Chiang Mai” pulls up photos year-round; confirm the current bloom status before making the drive.

At 1,300 metres-plus elevation the air runs noticeably cooler than the city below, especially before sunrise — pack a jacket even in the hot season. The terrain is steep switchback road rather than flat farmland, so allow extra driving time and expect fog on the upper stretches in the early morning.

Visit for the coffee and the mountain views even outside blossom season — the research station’s fruit orchards and the village’s own farm plots are worth the drive on their own, just without the crowds.
