Bang Pu Tourism Community

Bang Pu Tourism Community sits in a mangrove forest at the mouth of Pattani Bay, in Yaring district, where the canals Klong Kor, Klong Kue-Ngo and Klong Bang Pu meet the sea. It’s a Muslim fishing community that runs its own long-tail boat trips through the mangroves — roughly two-hour tours available year-round — plus evening firefly trips on moonless nights. Entry to the community is free; boat trips are arranged and paid for separately.

The mangrove forest itself is the draw: Samae Dam, Lamphu Thale and Pho Thale mangrove species grow thick along the canals, and in places the trees arch together to form a natural tunnel stretching several hundred metres. Boats move slowly enough to spot water birds along the banks, and the wide mouth of Pattani Bay opens out at the end of the route. After dark, on moonless nights, the community runs separate firefly-watching trips to a small island in the bay — some visitors combine this with an overnight stay.

Insider Tip: Book the firefly trip and the daytime mangrove tour as two separate outings rather than trying to combine them — the light conditions that make fireflies visible are the opposite of what you want for photographing the mangrove tunnel.

Watch out: Yaring district lies within Thailand’s three southernmost provinces, an area where governments’ travel advisories generally recommend checking current conditions before visiting. Bang Pu itself is a settled fishing community that runs regular tourist boat trips, but plan for daylight hours, stick to the organised tours, and confirm current conditions with the community contact before you go. Bring cash — card payment is limited this far into rural Pattani — and pack sun protection for the open stretches of the bay. November to April, the dry season, gives the calmest water and clearest skies for both the daytime and evening trips, though tours run throughout the year.
