A raised wooden boardwalk over Khlong Yamu canal is the whole point of the Yaring Mangrove Education Center — a free, government-run nature trail through roughly 500 rai of mangrove forest opposite the Yaring district office in Pattani province. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn saw the state of these mangroves on a royal visit by boat in 1993 and initiated the project that became this center; it’s run today as a conservation and education site rather than a commercial attraction.

The walkway itself is built from takian thong (Hopea odorata) hardwood and loops for roughly 1,250 metres through several distinct mangrove zones, each dominated by different trees adapted to their exposure to the tide — stands of thabun dam, tabak thale, and other salt-tolerant species along the way, with interpretive signs explaining what you’re looking at. At low tide, mudskippers dart across the exposed mud and fiddler crabs wave their oversized claws in territorial displays close enough to the boardwalk to watch without binoculars. A 13-metre birdwatching tower rises above the canopy partway around the loop, with a decent chance of spotting kingfishers or herons working the canal. Rest pavilions are spaced along the route for shade breaks.

Watch out: this isn’t a manicured tourist boardwalk. Visitor reports describe sections of aging or damaged decking that hasn’t been repaired, uneven joints, and no lighting once the sun goes down — the walkway also has no on-site guard after hours. Walk it in daylight, keep to a normal pace, and don’t let kids run ahead on the boards.

Insider Tip: Go at low tide in the early morning. That’s when the mud flats are exposed and mudskippers and crabs are most active — visit at high tide and there’s little wildlife to see beneath the boardwalk.

Key Facts:
  • Entry fee: Free
  • Hours: Daily, 08:30-16:30
  • Boardwalk: Roughly 1,250 metres of raised takian thong hardwood decking
  • Origin: Royal-initiated project following Princess Sirindhorn’s 1993 visit
  • Location: On Khlong Yamu, opposite Yaring district office, about 30 minutes from Pattani city

Bring insect repellent, water, and sun protection — the pavilions offer shade but there’s no café or shop on site. This is a genuinely quiet, low-key attraction that rewards visitors interested in coastal ecology over anyone wanting a polished tourist experience; pair it with nearby Hat Talo Kapo or the historic Krue Se Mosque for a fuller Pattani day trip.
