Secret Beach

Secret Beach is a small west-coast cove on Koh Phangan, officially Haad Son, tucked between Zen Beach and Haad Yao. It faces due west, which is the whole point: it’s one of the island’s best sunset beaches, and quieter than its better-known neighbours. It’s about 20 minutes (roughly 10 km) by scooter from Thong Sala, down a short, steep access road. Entry is free.

What it’s like

This is a compact, laid-back beach rather than a long stretch of sand — a place to swim, have a drink and watch the sun drop straight into the sea in front of you. The Koh Raham bar and restaurant sits on the right-hand edge, part of the Haad Son resort, with swings, hammocks and a deck reaching toward the cliffs; it’s the reason a lot of people time their visit for late afternoon. The water is calm and clearest in the dry season.

Insider Tip: Arrive 45 minutes to an hour before sunset to get a spot, order a drink and settle in. Because the cove faces west with a clear horizon, the sun sets directly ahead of you — no need to hunt for an angle.

Getting there

From Thong Sala, head up the west coast toward Sri Thanu and follow the signs off the main road. The final lane down to the beach is steep and narrow; confident riders can take it slowly, but if in doubt, leave the scooter at the top under the trees and walk down. There’s usually a cluster of parked bikes marking the entrance.

Watch out: That access road claims scooters regularly — loose surface, sharp gradient. Don’t ride down it if you’re not sure, and take extra care coming back up after dark once you’ve had a sundowner.

Combine it with the neighbouring sunset beach at Hin Kong further up the coast for a lazy west-coast afternoon.
