Hin Kong Beach

หาดหินกอง

Koh Phangan Reviewed Jul 2026

Hin Kong Beach is a quiet beach on the west coast of Koh Phangan, about 10 minutes’ drive from Thong Sala. It’s known for two things: sunsets over a clear sea horizon, and a laid-back, local feel far from the island’s party side. The water is shallow, so swimming works best at high tide; at low tide a broad sandbank is exposed instead. Entry is free, and a string of low-key bars and restaurants lines the shore.

What it’s like

This is a beach for slowing down rather than swimming lengths. Come the afternoon, people settle into the beachfront bars with a drink and wait for the sun to drop — it’s one of the reliable west-coast sunset spots. When the tide is out, the exposed sandbank makes for good photos and an easy paddle; when it’s in, roughly September to March, the water is deep enough for a proper swim. Kayaking, snorkelling, kiteboarding and yoga are all offered along this part of the coast.

Insider Tip: Check the tide before you go. High tide gives you swimmable water; low tide gives you the sandbank and mirror-flat reflections at sunset. Either can be lovely, but they’re very different visits — plan around the one you want.

Getting there

From Thong Sala Pier, follow the coastal road north up the west side of the island; Hin Kong is signposted and about 10 minutes away. A rented scooter is the usual way. Because it’s a local beach rather than a resort strip, facilities are simple — bring what you need for the afternoon.

Watch out: The shallow, gently shelving water is calm but not built for swimming at low tide. Time a dip for high tide, and bring reef-safe sunscreen to protect the shallows.

For sunset-hopping, the cove at Secret Beach is a short ride further down the coast, and the hilltop viewpoint at Wat Khao Tham looks back over this whole stretch.

On the west coast of Koh Phangan, about a 10-minute drive from Thong Sala Pier along the coastal road. It's one of the quieter, more local beaches on the island.
Can you swim at Hin Kong Beach?
Only really at high tide — the water is shallow for much of the day. High tides between roughly September and March give the best swimming; at low tide a sandbank is exposed instead, which is good for photos and a paddle.
Is it good for sunset?
Yes — it faces west with a clear sea horizon and is known for its sunsets. Arrive around 45 minutes before to settle in at one of the beachfront bars.
What's there to do?
It's mostly about relaxing, eating and watching the sunset, with restaurants and bars along the shore. Kayaking, snorkelling, kiteboarding and yoga are offered in this stretch of the west coast.
Is it busy?
No — it's laid-back and far quieter than the party beaches around Haad Rin. That's the appeal — a calm, local-feeling beach for a sundowner.
