Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center

The Chiang Mai City Arts and Cultural Center sits on the square behind the Three Kings Monument in the Chiang Mai Old City, in a former provincial administration building repurposed as a museum of the city’s Lanna history. Foreign admission is 90 THB for adults and 40 THB for children; Thai nationals pay considerably less, 20 THB and 10 THB. It’s open Wednesday through Sunday, 08:30-17:00, and closed Monday and Tuesday — including public holidays that fall on those days.

Exhibits move chronologically through Chiang Mai’s history, from the founding of the Lanna kingdom through the colonial-era teak trade to the city’s 20th-century growth, using a mix of period artefacts, scale models, and multimedia displays. Recreated room settings show how Lanna households were arranged, and rotating galleries feature local artists alongside the permanent collection. It’s a reasonable first stop if you want context before wandering the Old City’s temples — the narrative here explains a lot of what you’ll otherwise just be looking at without knowing why.

Insider Tip: Buy the 180 THB combined ticket (80 THB for children) rather than paying for this museum alone if you’re even mildly interested in the Lanna Folklife Museum next door — it’s valid for 7 days across both plus the Chiang Mai Historical Centre, and the three together give a much fuller picture than any one on its own.

Watch out: Don’t confuse this with the Lanna Folklife Museum or the Chiang Mai Historical Centre — three separate museums share the same square and the same combined ticket, but each covers different material. If you only have time for one, this centre gives the broadest overview.

The site sits within walking distance of the Old City’s main temples and markets, reachable on foot or by a short tuk-tuk or songthaew ride from most Old City accommodation. Plan 60-90 minutes for a proper visit, more if you’re doing the combined ticket in one day, and wear comfortable shoes — you’ll be on your feet moving between galleries.
