Chiang Mai Royal Agricultural Research Center (Khun Wang)
ศูนย์วิจัยเกษตรหลวงเชียงใหม่ (ขุนวาง)
Khun Wang is a working royal agricultural research station on the Doi Inthanon side of Mae Wang district, about 1 to 1.5 hours from central Chiang Mai by car. Entry is free, open daily 08:00–17:00, and the site covers roughly 450 rai of highland research plots.
The station exists to trial crops that don’t grow at lowland temperatures — highland vegetables, cut flowers, and fruit varieties suited to the cooler air at altitude — and most of the year that’s what you’ll see: working greenhouses, irrigation channels, and demonstration plots rather than a manicured garden. That changes for about two weeks every winter. Between mid-January and February, wild Himalayan cherry trees along the access road bloom into a pink tunnel that locals call nang phaya suea khrong — Thailand’s answer to sakura — and it’s this bloom, more than the research programme itself, that pulls in visitors from across the north. The flowers fade fast, usually gone by early March, so timing genuinely matters if that’s the draw.
Outside bloom season, the appeal is quieter: cool mountain air, terraced plots running down the hillside, and views over the Mae Wang valley that most Doi Inthanon day-trippers miss because they stick to the main summit road. It’s a working facility rather than a tourist park, so paths are functional rather than landscaped, and there’s no café or visitor centre beyond the basic grounds.
Insider Tip: If you’re chasing the cherry blossoms, check bloom reports the week you plan to go — the window shifts by a week or two each year, and arriving even ten days early or late means bare branches instead of the tunnel effect people come for.
