Chong Kai War Cemetery

Chong Kai War Cemetery holds 1,426 Commonwealth war graves and 313 Dutch war graves — 1,739 in total — on the bank of the Kwai Noi River outside Kanchanaburi town. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) maintains it, admission is free, and it stays open to visitors year-round with no set closing time.
The site began as a working POW camp during construction of the Burma-Siam railway, with a hospital built by the prisoners themselves. Most of those buried here died at that hospital rather than in direct railway accidents, and the cemetery was established by fellow prisoners at the time — not created afterward, unlike the larger Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (Don Rak) in town on Saeng Chuto Road, which holds well over 6,000 graves consolidated from cemeteries along the railway line after the war ended. The two sites are often confused; they are separate cemeteries several kilometres apart.
Rows of uniform headstones run across level lawns, each recording name, rank, regiment, and age where known. The CWGC’s own gardening team maintains the grounds using techniques suited to Thailand’s climate. Access is level from the main entrance shelter, with a step-free alternative through the car park.
Watch out: The CWGC notes there may be snakes on the grounds, as with most open lawns bordering the river in this part of Thailand — stick to the mown paths.
There is no dress code or ticket process; this is an open memorial ground, and the appropriate approach is the same as any war cemetery — quiet, unhurried, no drone photography or loud conversation.
- Burials: 1,426 Commonwealth, 313 Dutch (1,739 total)
- Entry: Free, open daily, no fixed closing time
- Location: Ban Khao Pun Road, on the Kwai Noi River, about 5 km from central Kanchanaburi
- Maintained by: Commonwealth War Graves Commission
Chong Kai pairs naturally with the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre and the Bridge over the River Kwai for a fuller picture of the railway’s history, but each site stands on its own and doesn’t need the others to be worth the visit.
