Doi Phuiko

Doi Phuiko is a 1,406-metre viewpoint in Sop Moei district, Mae Hong Son, known locally for a 360-degree sea of mist that fills the valleys below at sunrise. It’s free to visit, but getting to the top means leaving the vehicle behind — the final 800 metres from the trailhead near Ban Um Da Noi is on foot, a 15 to 20-minute walk up open ground.

The summit itself is more grassland than forest, which is exactly why the views work: nothing blocks the 360-degree sweep across Sop Moei’s ridgelines. In January and February the slopes turn a pale gold, and that combination of golden grass and morning mist below is what’s put Doi Phuiko on more travellers’ radar in the past few years — still a fraction of the crowds at better-known northern viewpoints like Doi Inthanon or Doi Ang Khang. Most visitors arrive in the afternoon, pitch a tent on the summit, and wait out the cold night for first light.

Insider Tip: Bring your own tent and warm gear if you’re staying for sunrise — there’s no accommodation or rental equipment on the mountain, and nighttime temperatures on the exposed summit drop well below what the valley floor feels like.

Watch out: there’s no public transport up here. From Mae Sariang, Highway 105 gets you to the Sop Moei junction, but the last stretch to the trailhead and the walk itself require your own vehicle (or a hired taxi) plus the will to walk the final 800 m on foot — this isn’t a drive-to-the-summit viewpoint.

Cool season (November-February) gives the clearest skies and the best odds of mist; outside that window cloud cover is far less predictable and the golden grass fades. Facilities are minimal to nonexistent — no shop, no toilet block confirmed at the summit — so treat it as a genuine hike, not a roadside stop.

Doi Phuiko is reached via Mae Sariang, the nearest town with hotels, fuel, and transport links — Sop Moei itself is a small district with limited services. For more of the same rolling upland scenery closer to town, Bua Tong Fields at Doi Mae Ho and Salawin National Park are both in Mae Sariang district.
