Bua Tong Fields at Doi Mae Ho
ทุ่งบัวตอง ดอยแม่เหาะ
Wild Bua Tong — Mexican sunflowers naturalised across northern Thailand’s hills — cover roughly 2 km of roadside slopes on Highway 108 at Doi Mae Ho, about 19 km from Mae Sariang in Mae Hong Son province. The bloom peaks from early November into December, and entry is free.
The flowers grow in dense bands right along the highway shoulder and up the terraced hillsides above it, so most people stop the car, walk a short stretch of roadside track, and shoot photos without any real hiking involved. Guardrail pull-offs and a couple of short paths cut up into the thicker patches for closer shots. There’s no formal ticket booth or visitor centre — this is a wild bloom on public land, not a managed garden, so the flowers vary year to year in density depending on rainfall and whether anyone’s cleared brush recently.
Insider Tip: Arrive before 8am. Buses and van tours from Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son converge on the roadside pull-offs by mid-morning during peak bloom weekends, and parking space along the narrow shoulder runs out fast.
A free campsite with showers and toilets sits at the site, aimed at people who want to catch first light on the fields without an early drive in. It’s basic — bring your own tent and food, as there’s little in the way of shops nearby. The surrounding hills stay green and forested outside bloom season, so outside November-December there’s little reason to make the detour.
Watch out: The drive in from Mae Sariang follows mountain curves with limited visibility. Morning mist is common in the cool season, so keep speed down and headlights on even in daylight.
- Entry: Free, no ticket booth
- Peak bloom: Early November to December
- Distance from Mae Sariang: ~19 km via Highway 108
- Facilities: Free campsite with showers and toilets
- Best light: Sunrise to 9am
Outside bloom season there’s not much to see beyond green hillsides, so this is a genuinely seasonal detour rather than a year-round stop. Pair it with a stop at Salawin National Park on the Myanmar border if you’re already out this way from Mae Sariang.
