Golden Triangle Park

Golden Triangle Park is the free public viewpoint at Sop Ruak, on the Mekong riverbank 9 km north of Chiang Saen, marking the spot where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet. The Ruak River, Thailand’s border with Myanmar, joins the Mekong, Thailand’s border with Laos, directly in front of the park — so from the same patch of ground you’re looking at all three countries at once.

Three Countries, One View

The park itself is simple: a riverside platform with sightlines across to Laos and Myanmar, backed by souvenir shops and a parking area. What draws photographers is the enormous seated golden Buddha, Phra Chiang Saen Si Phaendin, positioned on an ornate boat called Rua Kaew Kusoltham right at the water’s edge — a striking, deliberately built landmark rather than anything ancient. This stretch of river was once at the centre of the region’s opium trade, the source of the “Golden Triangle” name, though Thai government crop-substitution programs have shifted the Thai side of the border to legal farming since the 1980s. The deeper history is told at the Hall of Opium and House of Opium museums nearby, not at the park itself.

Getting on the Water

Longtail boats wait at Sop Ruak to run visitors out onto the Mekong for a closer look at the three-way confluence. The short loop to Don Sao, a small Lao island with its own market, runs about 30-45 minutes and costs roughly 400-500 THB per person; longer routes toward Chiang Saen or Chiang Khong take 40 minutes to an hour and a half and cost more, with prices set per boat and open to negotiation, especially in a group. Even without a boat trip, the viewpoint alone is worth the stop for the photo of the three riverbanks meeting.

Insider Tip: Go in the late afternoon — the golden Buddha statue catches the low sun directly, and the river traffic and light on the water make for better photos than the flatter light of midday.

Watch out: The souvenir stalls around the viewpoint see a lot of tour-bus traffic through the middle of the day; if you want a quieter look at the confluence, arrive early morning or toward sunset instead.

Practical

By car, take Highway 1 north from Chiang Rai to Mae Chan, then Highway 1016 toward Chiang Saen for about 29 km, following signposts for Sop Ruak. Without a car, the Chiang Rai-Chiang Saen green bus gets you close, with a short local ride to finish. There’s no entry fee and on-site parking is free. Pair the stop with the paid Hall of Opium or House of Opium museums a few minutes’ drive away for the historical context the park itself doesn’t cover, or continue on to Chiang Khong for a longer look at the Mekong border towns.
