Wat Klang Wiang

วัดกลางเวียง

Chiang Rai Reviewed Jul 2026
Entry Free

Wat Klang Wiang marks the literal centre of old Chiang Rai — not a marketing claim, but a surveyed fact. In 1875, Chao Luang Thammalangka, then ruler of Chiang Rai, had the city measured from its four corners to find the exact midpoint, and this temple sat on it. He installed the city’s guardian pillar, the Sadue Wiang (“city’s navel”), here and renamed the temple accordingly. It remains a working monastery today, Chiang Rai’s spiritual as well as geographic centre, with free entry and no fixed closing time posted at the gate.

The temple predates that 1875 survey by centuries — local history traces its founding to roughly 1432, in the early Lanna period. It was originally called Wat Chan Lok (or Wat Jantalok), named for a large red sandalwood tree that grew on the grounds; sandalwood held ritual significance in Lanna Buddhist practice, often used in Buddha-image veneration, which is likely why the temple built its identity around the tree in the first place. That original name lasted until the 1875 pillar installation, when it became Wat Chan Lok Klang Wiang, later shortened to just Wat Klang Wiang.

The sandalwood tree didn’t survive. A major storm in 1903 brought it down, destroying the ordination hall and viharn in the process and damaging the original city pillar beyond use. What stands today is the post-1903 rebuild — still recognisably Lanna in style, with carved teak structural elements and multi-tiered rooflines, but not the original 15th-century fabric. The current Sadue Wiang pillar dates only to 1992, a modern reconstruction of the city’s guardian spirit marker rather than a surviving relic.

Key Facts:
  • Entry fee: Free
  • Founded: c. 1432 (originally Wat Chan Lok)
  • City pillar (Sadue Wiang): installed 1875, rebuilt 1992 after storm damage
  • Location: Wiang subdistrict, central Chiang Rai — walking distance from the old city core
  • Status: Active working temple

Insider Tip: Locals still bring flower trays (khan dok) to the Sadue Wiang shrine as an offering to the city’s guardian spirit — an annual tradition that follows the Lanna lunar calendar rather than a fixed date, so ask at the temple office if you want to time a visit around it.

Being both a historic monastery and a civic shrine gives Wat Klang Wiang a different rhythm from Chiang Rai’s more tourist-facing temples — locals treat a visit here as much as a civic duty as a religious one. The usual etiquette applies: covered shoulders and knees, shoes off before entering any hall, and feet pointed away from Buddha images. It’s an easy add-on to a walking loop of old Chiang Rai, close enough to the night bazaar and clock tower to fold into an evening stroll rather than needing its own trip.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the "Sadue Wiang" at Wat Klang Wiang?
Sadue Wiang ("the city's navel") is Chiang Rai's lak mueang, or guardian city pillar — installed here in 1875 after a land survey found this exact spot to be the geographic centre of the old walled city.
Why is it called Wat Klang Wiang?
"Klang Wiang" means "middle of the walled city." The temple was originally named Wat Chan Lok after a large red sandalwood tree on the grounds, and only took its current name after the city pillar was installed here in 1875.
What happened to the original city pillar?
A storm in 1903 toppled the sandalwood tree and destroyed the ordination hall and viharn around it, damaging the original pillar beyond repair. A new city pillar was built on the site in 1992.
Is it free to enter?
Yes, free entry, and it's an active working temple with resident monks.
How do I get there?
It's within walking distance of central Chiang Rai, in Wiang subdistrict — the historic heart of the old walled city.
