Chiang Khong

Chiang Khong sits on the Thai bank of the Mekong River in Chiang Rai province, directly across from Houay Xai in Laos — the town exists largely because of that border crossing. Bak Pier, the international checkpoint here, runs 08:00-18:00 daily for boats across to Laos; the Fourth Thai-Lao Friendship Bridge a few kilometres outside town is the road alternative. Entry to the town itself is free.

The old quarter runs along Kad Kong Kao, a street of early-20th-century wooden shophouses that once served Mekong River traders, a short walk from Wat Luang Chaiyasathan. A riverside morning market sets up near the pier, and locals still do their almsgiving to monks along the water at dawn — a genuinely local scene rather than a staged photo stop. From the riverfront you can watch longtail boats and cargo vessels working the Mekong, with Laos visible on the opposite bank. Several viewpoints along the river — Huai Sai Man, Huai Ian — give elevated views over the water and the hills beyond.

Chiang Khong functions as much as a transit stop as a destination — many travellers pass through en route to or from Laos, staying one night before continuing by boat, bus, or the bridge crossing. That transient traffic keeps a handful of decent guesthouses and riverside restaurants running, without tipping the town into a tourist strip.

Insider Tip: Time a visit for early morning if you want to see the riverside market and almsgiving at their most active — both wind down well before mid-morning.

Regular buses connect Chiang Khong to Chiang Rai city, roughly two hours away. If crossing to Laos, bring your passport and check current visa requirements for your nationality before arriving at the pier. The Thai Lue Weaving Handicraft Center at Ban Hat Bai is in the same district and worth combining with a town visit.
