Khun San Statue

The Khun San Statue stands on the front lawn of the Sankhaburi District Office in Chainat, a modest 2.5-metre bronze tribute to a local figure from one of Thai history’s best-known last stands. Khun San — sometimes transliterated Khun Sak — led villagers from Ban Bang Rachan against the Burmese army in the year before Ayutthaya fell in 1767, and Sankhaburi claims him as a native son.

There’s no elaborate visitor infrastructure here — this is a district-office monument, not a purpose-built historical park. The statue sits in an open, unticketed plot with basic landscaping around it, the kind of stop you make on the way through Sankhaburi rather than a destination in its own right. Locals refer to Khun San as the “Hero of the Noi River Basin” (the Mae Nam Noi, a Chao Phraya distributary that runs through this stretch of Chainat), reflecting the region his resistance campaign covered rather than the exact spot the statue stands on.

Insider Tip: Combine the visit with a look at Sankhaburi’s old town core nearby — the statue itself takes ten minutes, but the district has other Ayutthaya-era history worth a slower look if you’re already in the area.

Sankhaburi holds an annual ceremony at the monument on 19 January, the date associated with Khun San’s death, when locals gather for a spirit-invocation ritual (buang suang) to honour him. Outside that date, the site is quiet — a handful of locals stopping to pay respects, more than any steady tourist traffic.

Watch out: Shade is limited around the statue itself. Midday visits in Chainat’s hot season get uncomfortable fast — go early or late in the day.
