Laem Son Temple

Laem Son Temple sits on a headland where the Lang Suan River meets the Gulf of Thailand, in Chumphon province — not to be confused with the much larger Laem Son National Park on the opposite, Andaman coast in Ranong. This is a working village wat rather than a major pilgrimage site, valued locally for its river-mouth position and open Gulf views rather than architectural grandeur.

The temple grounds include a main prayer hall and a scattering of smaller shrines and stupas built up the low headland, giving views out over the river mouth and the sea beyond. Because it faces the Gulf, not the Andaman, sunrise rather than sunset is the better light here — the sun comes up over open water directly in front of the temple. Fishing boats working the river mouth are a constant backdrop, tying the site to the working coastline it sits on rather than presenting it as a purely scenic stop.

Watch out: don’t plan a Laem Son Temple visit as part of a Ranong or Andaman-coast itinerary — it’s on the opposite side of the peninsula from Laem Son National Park, roughly 250km away by road. Confirm which “Laem Son” you’re booking transport to.

As a local temple rather than a major tourist site, Laem Son sees mostly Thai visitors and villagers coming to make merit, so it’s a genuinely quiet spot outside of festival days. Standard temple etiquette applies — covered shoulders and knees, shoes off in the prayer halls — and there’s little shade on the open headland, so midday visits are hot going.

Insider Tip: combine it with a look at the river mouth itself at Pak Nam Lang Suan, or the nearby Princess Mother Memorial Park, rather than treating the temple as a stand-alone destination — on its own it’s a 20–30 minute stop.

Lang Suan district has a handful of other low-key stops worth combining with the temple, including Khao Kriap Cave inland and the riverside community at Pak Nam Lang Suan itself.
