Lan Hin Si Chomphu (Pink Rock Coast)

A shoreline of pink boulders is not something Thailand’s east coast prepares you for. Lan Hin Si Chomphu — literally “pink rock terrace” — runs along the seafront of Khung Kraben Wildlife Sanctuary in Chanthaburi’s Tha Mai district, where iron-rich arkose sandstone has weathered into rounded outcrops in shades from rose-red to purple-brown. When afternoon sun hits the wet rock at low tide, the whole terrace glows.

The walk in is half the point. From the sanctuary, a nature trail of roughly 1 km follows the coast to the terrace, passing between dry forest and open shoreline — reckon on about 90 minutes out and back at an easy pace, longer if you stop to photograph every outcrop. The terrace itself doubles as a viewpoint: the offshore islands sit in clear sight, and it faces the right way for sunset over the gulf.

Timing decides how much you actually see. At high tide, most of the shelf disappears under water; at low tide the full spread of pink rock is exposed, which is when the place earns its name. February to June is locally considered the clearest stretch for colour and visibility. The sanctuary gates run 08:00-16:30 daily, so a late-afternoon low tide is the ideal draw.

Insider Tip: Check a tide table for Chao Lao Beach before driving out. The trail is worth walking either way, but the pink terrace at high tide is mostly a rumour — a low tide that falls between about 14:00 and the 16:30 closing gives you exposed rock and warm side light in one visit.

Watch out: The rock is smooth, and the lower shelves stay wet and slippery where the tide has just pulled back. Wear shoes with grip rather than beach sandals, and keep small children off the seaward edges — there are no railings out here.

The sanctuary’s mangrove boardwalks make an easy add-on before or after the trail, and the drive in passes Khung Wiman Beach, one of the quieter stretches of sand on this coast. Both slot naturally into a day exploring Chanthaburi’s shoreline, an hour’s drive from the old town’s waterfront community.
