Khao Matsee Viewpoint
จุดชมวิวเขามัทรี
Khao Matsee Viewpoint sits on a hilltop about 20 km southeast of Chumphon town, overlooking the point where the Pak Nam Chumphon estuary meets the Gulf of Thailand. Despite the “mountain” tag this page carried for years, there’s no rainforest trekking involved — a steep, paved road climbs to a car park and cafe terrace at the summit, open daily from 06:00 to 20:00, free to enter.
- Entry fee: Free
- Hours: Daily 06:00–20:00
- Access: Paved road to the summit — drivable, not a hiking trail
- Facilities: Cliffside cafe, restrooms, parking
- Best for: Sunrise or sunset over the estuary
The view is the entire point of coming here. From the terrace you’re looking almost 360 degrees: Chumphon town and the Pak Nam river estuary spread out on one side, the Gulf of Thailand and its scatter of islands on the other, with Pak Nam Chumphon Beach and Pharadonphap Beach both visible along the coastline below. It’s one of the few spots in the province where you get town, river mouth, and open sea in a single frame.
Insider Tip: Time your visit for late afternoon. The light over the estuary at sunset is what draws most repeat visitors, and the cafe terrace has seating angled toward it — arrive by 5:30 PM in the dry season to get a table with the view.
Watch out: The access road is genuinely steep with tight switchbacks. It’s manageable in a car, but if you’re on a rented scooter, take it slowly on the way down — the descent is where most near-misses happen, not the climb.
The cafe at the top serves basic Thai coffee and cold drinks rather than a full menu, so it’s a stop for the view and a drink, not a meal. Restrooms and a parking area mean you can comfortably spend 30–45 minutes taking photos without rushing back down. There’s little shade beyond the cafe roof, so midday visits in hot season (March–May) can be uncomfortably warm on the exposed terrace — the morning and late-afternoon windows work better for comfort as well as light.
Combine it with the beaches it looks out over: Hat Sai Ri and Pharadonphap Beach are both a short drive away in Chumphon and make an easy pairing with a sunset stop at the viewpoint.
