Mikin Farm

Two siblings who grew up on this land in Chorakhe subdistrict, Nong Ruea district, gave up city jobs and turned their parents’ rice fields into Mikin Farm — a working organic farm, open-air kitchen and small homestay about 35 km northwest of Khon Kaen city. Entry to walk the grounds is free; you pay only for food, workshops or a room.

The name means “have something to eat,” and the farm earns it. Vegetable beds, herb rows and fruit trees ring a cluster of wooden pavilions, with chickens and the odd water buffalo working the margins. The kitchen serves whatever the fields produced that week — an Isan-style thick curry made with local fish is the dish most people remember, cooked to order and eaten at long shared tables under a corrugated roof. The smell of grilled chicken and lemongrass tends to drift across the whole property by midday.

Rice is the farm’s teaching tool as much as its crop. Depending on the month, visitors can wade into a paddy for transplanting (roughly June-July) or join the harvest cutting later in the year (around November), guided by the family rather than staff hired for the job. It’s genuinely muddy work — expect to rinse off before lunch — and outside those windows the “rice activity” is really just a walk past growing paddy rather than a hands-on session, so ask what’s actually running before you plan a visit around it.

Insider Tip: Book the meal and any workshop the same call — the kitchen cooks to the numbers confirmed in advance, and turning up without notice can mean a thinner menu or none at all.

Mornings are the better time to come — cooler for walking the fields, and closer to when the kitchen is still prepping rather than winding down. Wear shoes you don’t mind getting muddy, bring a hat, and budget half a day if you’re staying for lunch and a workshop rather than a quick loop of the grounds.
