Nam Phong National Park

Nam Phong National Park sits beside the Ubolratana Dam reservoir in Nong Ruea district, the national park closest to Khon Kaen city. Its terrain is unusual for Isan — open grassland that floods into seasonal wetland after the rains, then dries back to exposed plain by the hot season. Entry is 100 THB for foreign adults (50 THB for children) and 20 THB for Thai adults (10 THB for children), with gates open daily from 08:30 to 16:30.

The appeal here is the wetland-grassland cycle itself. Through the rainy season and into early winter, shallow floodwater covers large stretches of the park, drawing herons, egrets, and migratory waterbirds that feed in the shallows at dawn and dusk. As the water recedes, the same ground turns into dry grassland dotted with scattered trees, and the birds thin out accordingly. Wooden walkways cross the wetter sections so you can get close to the water without wading through mud, and a handful of low viewpoints look out over the grassland toward the dam. Bring binoculars — most of the wildlife here keeps its distance, and the birding rewards patience more than proximity.

Coolest and most active are the early morning hours, when mist sits over the water and birds are feeding before the heat sets in. By midday in the hot season the grassland offers little shade, and both people and wildlife retreat. November through February is the strongest window: migratory species are present, daytime temperatures stay comfortable, and the wetlands still hold enough water to be interesting without the rainy-season access problems that can close some trails.

Insider Tip: Skip the midday visit entirely — come for the first two hours after the gate opens at 08:30, when the light is good for photos and the birds are still active before the heat pushes them into cover.

From Khon Kaen city, the drive north on Route 2 through Ubolratana district takes roughly an hour; a car or motorbike is worth arranging since public transport doesn’t run directly to the park entrance. Sun protection, water, and closed shoes for the grassland trails are essential — there’s little shade once you’re away from the tree line.

Ubolratana Dam, the reservoir the park backs onto, is worth combining with a visit for lakeside food stalls and boat trips. Phu Wiang National Park, Khon Kaen’s dinosaur-fossil park, makes a fuller day trip if you’re touring the province’s national parks. Khon Kaen city is the practical base for both.
