Hin Chang Si Viewpoint

Hin Chang Si is a sandstone rock-formation viewpoint inside Nam Phong National Park, in Ban Fang district about an hour’s drive from Khon Kaen city. A marked nature trail of roughly 1.3 km winds past individually named outcrops — weathered into shapes locals have nicknamed over the years, including the elephant-like forms that give the site its name — before opening onto a viewpoint over the forested valley below.

The trail is easy walking rather than a serious hike: rest points and directional signs appear at intervals, and most visitors cover it in one to two hours including stops for photos. From the main viewpoint, the outlook runs across tree cover toward Ubolratana Dam’s reservoir in the distance, best in the cooler early morning before the midday sun flattens the light. Weekday mornings see very few other visitors — this isn’t a well-trafficked stop compared to Khon Kaen’s temple and museum circuit.

Insider Tip: Bring your own water and snacks — there are no shops or vendors on the trail itself, only a small checkpoint kiosk at the park entrance.

Watch out: The rock surfaces get slick after rain, and there’s minimal shade on the exposed viewpoint sections — carry sun protection and avoid the midday hours in the hot season.

Hin Chang Si is one stop within Nam Phong National Park; Ubolratana Dam or Phong Nip Dam sits in the same area and is a reasonable pairing for a day out from Khon Kaen.
