Mo Paeng Waterfall

Mo Paeng Waterfall drops over three tiers of smooth granite about 9 km west of Pai, and the top tier is a natural rock slide that’s the main reason people make the trip. Entry costs 50 THB for Thai nationals and 100 THB for foreigners — a change introduced in 2021, so anything describing it as free is out of date.

The waterfall isn’t tall or powerful; its appeal is the series of pools stepping down the rock face, each shallow enough to wade and connected by slides worn smooth by decades of use. Flow depends heavily on season. During the wet months (roughly June–October) the slides run fast and the pools fill deep; by the end of the dry season (March–May) the water thins out substantially and some of the smaller slides can run dry. Locals use the rock face as their own water park on a hot afternoon, and it’s easy to see why.

Watch out: The rock slides cause real injuries — the granite is naturally smooth and becomes more slippery where algae builds up, and the landing depth at the bottom of each slide shifts with the water level. Check depth before you slide, skip it if the flow looks too fast, and expect wet rock even where it looks dry.

A short, mostly flat path through forest connects the tiers, with tree cover for most of the walk. Bring water and sturdy shoes with grip rather than flip-flops — the approach to the pools is uneven and wet in patches even in the dry season.

Insider Tip: Go on a weekday morning before the tour vans arrive — the slides and pools are shared space, and a crowded top tier makes the slide itself more dangerous, not less fun. Combine it with Pai Canyon or Pam Bok Waterfall, both a short drive away, for a fuller day out of town.
