Muak Lek Grape Gardens
ไร่องุ่นอำเภอมวกเหล็ก
Muak Lek district in eastern Saraburi is one of the few places in Thailand cool and elevated enough for table grapes to thrive, and a handful of family-run farms here have turned that into a modest agritourism trade. This isn’t a single fenced attraction with a ticket booth — it’s the Tourism Authority of Thailand’s umbrella listing for the district’s grape-growing area, covering several independently run vineyards including Khun Mali Farm, Phu Amorn Garden and Winery, Kamnan Maeng Vineyard, and Papasara Vineyard, scattered along the roads around Muak Lek and Lamphaya Klang subdistricts.
At most of these farms you can walk the vine rows, sample grapes straight off the plant, and buy fresh bunches, grape juice, wine, or dried fruit to take home. Some grow seedless varieties bred for the local climate; others press a portion of the harvest into simple table wines sold on-site. None of this is polished or signposted the way a single big-name winery would be — you’re visiting a working farm, and the experience varies from stall to stall depending on who’s growing what that season.
Watch out: hours are informal and vary by farm. Weekends and public holidays during the December–February harvest are the most reliable time to find a farm open and staffed; turn up on a random Tuesday in July and there may be little to see or taste.
Insider Tip: Muak Lek sits on the way to Khao Yai from Bangkok, so it works well as a short stop rather than a destination in itself — 20 to 30 minutes among the vines, then back on the road. Muak Lek Arboretum, also in the district, is an easy add-on for a longer stop.
The cool season (November–February) is also the most comfortable time to be outdoors here, with milder temperatures than the rest of central Thailand. Bring cash, since most of these small farms don’t take cards, and wear closed shoes for uneven ground between the rows.
- Entry: Generally free to walk the rows; grape-picking sometimes charged by weight
- Best season: December–February harvest
- Best days: Weekends and public holidays — weekday hours are unreliable
- Location: Scattered farms across Muak Lek and Lamphaya Klang subdistricts, Saraburi
- Nearby: Khun Malee Vineyard, a separate single-site winery in the same district
