Namtok Pha Suea

Namtok Pha Suea drops about 10 metres over a broad rock face on the road up toward Ban Rak Thai, inside Tham Pla-Namtok Pha Suea National Park. The waterfall’s Thai name — “mat cliff” — describes exactly what it looks like at full flow: water sheeting across the full 15-metre width of the rock rather than dropping in a single channel, resembling a woven mat unrolled down the stone.

The Mae Sae stream that feeds it rises across the border in Myanmar, so the water keeps flowing year-round even when other Mae Hong Son waterfalls thin out in the dry season — though the difference between a wet-season and dry-season visit here is dramatic. July through September, at the tail end of the rains, the full width of the cliff runs white. By March and April the flow narrows to a fraction of that, though the pool at the base still holds enough water for a quick dip.

Entry runs 100 THB for foreign adults and 20 THB for Thai adults, the same ticket that covers Tham Pla-Namtok Pha Suea National Park’s other main feature, the Tham Pla Fish Cave, a spring pool a few kilometres back toward Mae Hong Son town where sacred carp gather beneath a hermit statue. Most visitors see both on the same stop, since the ticket doesn’t distinguish between them.

Insider Tip: Time a visit here with the drive up to Ban Rak Thai itself or a stop at Pang Ung, the pine-forested lake further along the same road — the three sit close enough together to combine into one loop from Mae Hong Son town.

Watch out: The rock around the base gets slick with spray during the rainy season, and the trail down from the parking area isn’t lit — plan to arrive well before the 16:30 gate closing.
