Namtok Pla Ba drops about 10 metres over a broad granite ledge in the hills above Ban Pla Ba, roughly 17 km from Phu Ruea district town in Loei. The stream is fed by runoff from the Phu Luang Wildlife Sanctuary above, and a maintained steel staircase leads from the car park down to the pool at the base. Entry is free, and the site opens daily from 06:00 to 18:00.
It’s a modest, single-stage waterfall rather than a sprawling multi-tier cascade — locally it’s also known as Namtok Tat San. Water spreads across the rock face into a shaded pool ringed by forest, shallow enough in most seasons for a cooling dip after the short walk down. The setting stays quiet even on weekends; Loei’s better-known waterfalls draw the coach-tour crowds, and Pla Ba mostly gets local families and the occasional passing hiker.
Watch out: the steel staircase is well built but gets slick after rain — wear shoes with real grip rather than flip-flops, especially on the way back up.
Flow depends on how much rain has fallen upstream in the sanctuary, so the fall looks its fullest during and just after the rains taper off, into the start of the cool season. By November through February the trails are dry and the temperature is comfortable for the walk down and back, which is why locals treat this as the better visiting window rather than the height of the rainy season. Later in the dry season, March through May, the flow can thin to a trickle.
Insider Tip: pair the visit with Phu Ruea National Park or the Yot Phu Ruea viewpoint nearby — both sit within a similar drive from Phu Ruea town, so a half-day loop covering the waterfall and a viewpoint stop is easy to put together without doubling back.
