Piang Din Waterfall (Wisutthara Waterfall)

Piang Din Waterfall gets its name from where it sits: below road level rather than up a mountainside, so instead of a long trek uphill you walk down a series of stepped limestone terraces, about 30-50 metres from the parking area to the water. It’s in Nong Hin district, roughly 2km past the limestone rock garden at Suan Hin Pha Ngam, and entry is free, daily 08:30-16:30.

The falls drop over several limestone shelves into a series of pools, with a natural slide effect where the rock has been worn smooth — locals swim here on weekends, using the lower pools rather than climbing the slippery upper tiers. Because the water comes from spring seepage in the surrounding hills rather than direct rainwater runoff, there’s no flash-flood risk and a steady, moderate flow through most of the year, though the best volume comes just after the rainy season, roughly June to November. Dense forest crowds in on both sides of the stream, keeping the whole gully shaded and several degrees cooler than the open road above.

Insider Tip: Combine this with Suan Hin Pha Ngam on the same trip — it’s a two-minute drive further up the road, and most people do both in a single loop out of Nong Hin.

Watch out: The limestone underfoot is naturally slick where water runs over it, especially on the smoothed “slide” sections. Wear shoes with real grip rather than sandals if you’re getting in the water.

The falls sit in the same cluster of natural attractions as the limestone peak at Phu Pa Po and the cave formations at Tham Phothisat, all within a few kilometres of each other in Nong Hin district — a reasonable half-day loop if you’re based out of Loei town. Take Highway 201 toward Nong Hin, then follow signs for Suan Hin Pha Ngam; the waterfall parking area is just past it on the same road. There’s no public transport out this way, so a rented car or motorbike is the practical option.
