Namtok Sarika

Namtok Sarika is a nine-tier waterfall in Sarika sub-district, Nakhon Nayok — the tallest and best-known waterfall in the province, with its highest drop running over 200 metres down a forested cliff on the Nakhon Nayok side of Khao Yai National Park. Entry is 200 THB for foreign adults (40 THB for Thai adults), open daily 08:00-17:00.

Water drops in stages through the nine tiers, each landing in a pool of a different size — some shallow enough only to wade, others deep enough to swim when the flow is moderate. A paved and stepped trail follows the falls up through the tiers, with vendors near the entrance selling brooms and artificial pine-flower crafts alongside the usual food stalls. On a hill a short distance from the falls sits Tham Sarika, a small cave shrine — now known as Wat Tham Sarika — where the forest monk Luang Pu Mun (Phra Ajahn Mun Bhuridatto) spent a period of intensive meditation around 1912, an episode his biographers treat as a turning point in his practice. Monks and nuns still use nearby kutis (meditation huts) for retreats.

The falls draw the heaviest crowds on weekends and holidays, when Bangkok day-trippers fill the lower pools; a weekday morning gets you the same nine tiers with far fewer people in the photos. Flow peaks just after the rainy season, October-November, when every tier runs full — by the hot season some of the upper drops thin to a trickle over bare rock.

Insider Tip: The lower two or three tiers are an easy, flat walk from the entrance — worth doing even if you don’t attempt the steeper climb to the upper tiers, where the trail gets narrow and the rock stays slick well after rain.

Watch out: Rocks near the pools are slippery even when they look dry, and the current in the upper tiers picks up fast after rain — stick to designated swimming areas and heed any closure signs after storms.
