Namtok Nang Rong

Namtok Nang Rong is a multi-tiered waterfall inside Khao Yai National Park’s Nakhon Nayok side, in Hin Tang sub-district. Water drops over a series of rock shelves into shallow pools at each level before feeding into the forest below. It’s open daily 06:00-18:00; a nominal site fee applies — 5 THB per person plus a vehicle charge of 10-150 THB depending on transport — rather than the full national park gate fee charged at Khao Yai’s main entrance.

Several tiers step down through forest, each with a plunge pool shallow enough for wading; swimming is common at the lower levels when flow is moderate. The site has guesthouses, food stalls selling som tam and grilled meats near the entrance, and toilets, making it one of the more developed access points into this side of the park.

Flow peaks just after the rainy season, roughly October-November, when the upper tiers run full rather than trickling over bare rock. Weekends and Thai public holidays draw crowds from Bangkok, about a 1.5-2 hour drive; a weekday morning gets you the pools without a queue for photos.

Insider Tip: The upper tiers require a short scramble over wet rock — grippy sandals or trail shoes do better than flip-flops, especially once the stone’s been splashed by midday crowds.

Watch out: Rocks stay slick even where they look dry, and the current picks up fast after rain upstream — check conditions with the ranger post before wading into any pool beyond the first tier.

The waterfall sits in Nakhon Nayok province, about 20 km along Route 3049, with the turn-off 7 km past the Km. 12 marker on the same road — a straightforward drive from Nakhon Nayok town, no permit required beyond the site fee at the gate. For a quieter alternative on the same side of the park, Namtok Sarika draws smaller crowds, and a day out here pairs naturally with Khun Dan Prakan Chon Dam, the province’s other well-known water feature.

Nakhon Nayok markets itself as a weekend escape from Bangkok precisely because of sites like this — waterfalls, dams, and reservoirs within a couple of hours’ drive of the capital. Namtok Nang Rong is one of the more accessible entry points into Khao Yai’s dense forest without committing to the full national park circuit on the Nakhon Ratchasima side, which is why it draws a steady stream of day-trippers rather than the overnight trekkers the main park attracts.
