Tawan Chai Beach

Tawan Chai Beach is a wide stretch of sand on the Gulf of Thailand coast, in Lamae district south of Chumphon town. It’s a working beach lined with coconut palms rather than a resort strip — local fishing boats still work the shoreline, and there’s no built-up tourist infrastructure to speak of. The name roughly translates to “shining sun,” a plain description rather than a marketing flourish.

The beach sits at Mu 3, off Highway 4019, reached by heading south from Chumphon on Phetkasem Road (Highway 4) to the Thung Sawan intersection, through Lamae town, then turning onto Highway 4019 for about 5 km. Some visitor reports describe the sand as less clean when the tide goes out, exposing mud flats — worth checking tide times before planning a swim rather than just a walk. Coconut palms run parallel to the shore for shade, and the fishing-boat traffic gives the place a working-coast character rather than a manicured beach-resort one.

Watch out: Visitor reports on tide conditions are mixed — some describe clean sand and calm water, others mention mud flats at low tide. This isn’t a beach to build a full beach day around without checking conditions first; it suits a stop, a walk, and photos more reliably than a long swim.

There are no shops or restaurants on-site, so bring water, sun protection, and anything else you need for the visit.
