Pha Rom Yen Waterfall

Pha Rom Yen Waterfall drops down a moss-covered limestone cliff in the forest outside Ban Rai, in the hilly west of Uthai Thani. Rather than a tall, tiered cascade, it’s a single thin curtain of water sliding down the rock face — in low water it reads more like falling rain than a roaring fall. Entry is free, and the walk in from the car park is about 400 metres, roughly 20 minutes each way.

The water steps down the cliff in a few short stages rather than one long drop, pooling shallow at the base. Dense forest shades the whole approach, keeping the air noticeably cooler than the open road outside, and the moss stays green through most of the year even when the flow thins. The trail itself starts on concrete steps, switches to a metal staircase partway up, and finishes on packed forest ground — sturdy shoes make a real difference on the metal sections when they’re wet.

It’s a modest, quiet spot rather than a developed park: a handful of benches and little else, no vendors lining the path. Weekends and the rainy season bring the most visitors, but even then it rarely feels crowded. Flow is seasonal and strongest from around June through October, during and just after the rains; by the hot season (March–May) it can drop to little more than a trickle down the rock, so anyone chasing photos of the falls at full flow should aim for the wetter months.

Insider Tip: Call ahead for a local guide (0 5698 4069) if you’re visiting in the rainy season — the metal stairs get properly slick after a downpour, and someone who knows the current trail conditions is worth the small arrangement.

Watch out: The rocks around the pools stay wet and mossy even outside the rains. Move carefully near the water’s edge, and skip flip-flops for the walk in.

Reaching the falls means driving the Ban Rai–Phu Baon road (Highway 3011) out of Ban Rai town toward Ban Mai Rom Yen village, then following the signed turn to the car park. There’s little in the way of facilities beyond parking, so bring your own water and snacks.
