Namtok Tat Dao

Namtok Tat Dao is a small forest waterfall in Kaen Makrut subdistrict, Ban Rai district, in the western hills of Uthai Thani — not to be confused with the better-known, larger Tat Dao waterfall inside Sri Satchanalai National Park in neighbouring Sukhothai province, a separate and unrelated site despite the identical name.

The water drops through around nine levels of exposed rock, shaded by forest canopy the whole way down, ending in a pool at the base that’s generally calm enough to swim in. It’s a modest fall rather than a headline attraction — the kind of stop locals make on the way to or from somewhere else, not a destination in its own right.

Watch out: Flow depends heavily on rainfall. September to November, once the wet season has fed the stream, is when the falls run strongest; by the hot season peak in March-April the water can drop to a trickle. Check recent conditions before making a special trip out here in the dry months.

Insider Tip: Tham Kret Dao (Kret Dao Cave) sits directly across the road from the waterfall entrance — a bat-roosted limestone cave you enter down a bamboo staircase, with crystalline rock formations that catch torchlight well. Bring your own flashlight; there’s no lighting inside. Pairing the two makes for a worthwhile short stop even though neither site alone justifies a special trip.

For the province’s headline natural attraction, Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary — a UNESCO World Heritage forest — lies further north in Uthai Thani. Closer by, also in Ban Rai district, Phu Wai Cave is another low-key limestone cave worth combining with a Tat Dao visit if you’re already out this way.
