Phra That Mahachai

Phra That Mahachai is the Wednesday-midday stupa in Nakhon Phanom’s well-known set of day-of-the-week That shrines — an octagonal chedi roughly 37 metres tall, built inland in Pla Pak district rather than on the Mekong riverfront that draws visitors to the province’s more famous temples. It sits around 39 km from Nakhon Phanom town along Highway 22 toward Sakon Nakhon, in farming country away from the border.

Luang Pu Kham Phan Khosapanyo, a monk still remembered locally for his reputation in meditation and teaching, resettled families in the area in 1951 and had the chedi built the following year on the site of an earlier temple. Its octagonal shape sets it apart from the more common bell-shaped That stupas elsewhere in the province, and it’s said to enshrine relics of the Buddha along with those of two of his early disciples, Sariputta and Anuruttha. Inside the viharn, a standing Buddha image carved from sandalwood — reportedly the largest of its kind in the country — shares the hall with murals depicting scenes from Buddhist history. Insider Tip: the temple hosts an annual merit-making fair in early March around the founder’s memory, when the compound is far busier than on an ordinary day — worth timing a visit around if you want to see it at its most active, or avoiding if you’d rather have the grounds to yourself.

Away from festival days, the atmosphere is unhurried. This is a working village temple rather than a tour-bus stop: locals come to make merit, monks go about the routines of temple life, and there’s little of the crowd management or ticketing you’d find at Nakhon Phanom’s headline sites. Watch out: because it’s inland and not on any riverside route, there isn’t a scenic waterfront walk here — come for the chedi and the Buddha image, not for Mekong views.

Highway 22 makes the drive from Nakhon Phanom straightforward by car or motorbike; without your own transport, a chartered songthaew or taxi from town is the practical option, as there’s no regular public bus running the full distance. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered, before entering the viharn, and remove your shoes at the door. Entry is free, and a morning visit avoids both the heat and the fair-day crowds.
