Phu Lom Lo
ภูลมโล
Phu Lom Lo is a 1,600-metre peak inside Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, on the Loei side of the park near the Phitsanulok border. Its slopes carry an estimated 200,000-plus Wild Himalayan Cherry trees (Prunus cerasoides, called nang phaya suea krong in Thai) that flower pink for a few weeks each year, roughly late December to mid-January. Outside that window it’s simply forested hillside — most of the year there’s little reason to make the climb.
Experience
Access is by community pickup truck only; private vehicles aren’t allowed on the summit road. Trucks run from Kok Sathon, organised through the Kok Sathon Tourist Association (06 2557 0912), operating roughly 05:00–16:30 during bloom season at about 1,500 THB return. The alternative route climbs from Ban Rong Kla on the Phitsanulok side of the park. At the top, the pink canopy spreads across the mountainside and valley below — the reason people make the trip is genuinely the flowers, not the summit view alone, so timing matters more here than at most viewpoints.
Atmosphere & Timing
Start before dawn if you can — clouds typically build across the valley by mid-morning, and the clearest views come in the first hour or two after the pickup trucks begin running at 5 AM. Temperatures at 1,600 metres run 10–15°C cooler than Dan Sai town below, and January mornings before sunrise can feel close to freezing.
Insider Tip: Call the Kok Sathon Tourist Association a day or two ahead during peak bloom (early January) — trucks fill fast on weekends, and confirming a seat beats arriving to a queue with no vehicle free.
Watch out: The bloom window is short and weather-dependent — a warm December can push it earlier, a cold snap can hold it later. Arriving even two weeks off the peak often means bare branches rather than the pink hillside in the photos. Check that season’s dates before booking transport.
Practical
The park doesn’t permit overnight stays on the summit. The closest accommodation is the campsite at Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park or guesthouses in Dan Sai district, Loei. Bring a headlamp if setting out before dawn, and layers for the cold at altitude.
