Phu Kho is a community-forest sunrise viewpoint in Na Haeo district, Loei, close to the Laos border — not to be confused with the identically-named Phu Kho viewpoint roadside on Highway 12 through Nam Nao National Park in Phetchabun, roughly 290 km away. This one sits around 850–900 metres above sea level and is free to enter via TAT, though getting to the lookout itself costs a transport fee.

There’s no hiking trail here in the usual sense. Several community operators — among them a farm known locally as “Aunt Jo’s Phu Kho” — run their own viewpoints from patches of community forest, and the way up is by song-taen: a modified pickup truck that collects visitors near Na Haeo Hospital and grinds up roughly 30 minutes of unpaved farm track to the ridge. It’s a genuinely local operation, not a park-run facility, which is part of the appeal and part of the logistics you need to plan around.

What you get at the top is a sea-of-mist view stretching over farmland and forested valleys toward the Thai-Lao border — best between September and December, when cold, clear mornings pack the valleys with fog before sunrise burns it off. Outside that window the view is still there, just less dramatic. Locally, people also talk about “Phu Kho Noi” (little Phu Kho), a second, lower viewpoint nearby run by a different operator — if one lookout is fully booked or crowded, ask about the other rather than giving up on the trip.

This whole corner of Na Haeo only opened up to organised tourism relatively recently, which is part of why it still runs on informal, family-operated logistics rather than a park visitor centre. That’s the appeal for travellers who want something Thailand’s bigger northern viewpoints (Doi Inthanon, Phu Chi Fa) no longer offer — genuine local operators, small groups, and a fraction of the crowd — but it also means English isn’t guaranteed on the phone when booking a song-taen, so a Thai-speaking contact or hotel help arranging the ride is worth having.

Insider Tip: Arrange the song-taen ahead through one of the community operators rather than turning up cold — there’s no public parking or trailhead, so without a booked ride you can’t reach the viewpoint at all.

Watch out: Temperatures at the top drop well below what you’d expect from lowland Thailand before dawn — bring a real jacket, not just a light layer, especially November through January.

Key Facts:
  • Viewpoint entry: Free (TAT listing); song-taen transport ~500 THB round-trip per vehicle (up to 5 people)

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same Phu Kho viewpoint as the one in Nam Nao National Park?
No — that's a different spot, a roadside lookout at kilometre 46 on Highway 12 through Phetchabun's Nam Nao National Park. This Phu Kho is a community-forest lookout in Loei's Na Haeo district, near the Laos border, roughly 290 km away.
Can I drive or hike to the viewpoint myself?
Not really. It's reached by a local song-taen (modified pickup taxi) run by community operators based near Na Haeo Hospital — about 30 minutes over unpaved farm roads. There's no public trailhead or car park at the top.
How much does it cost?
TAT lists free admission to the viewpoint itself, but the song-taen ride that actually gets you there runs roughly 500 THB round-trip per vehicle, shared between up to five passengers.
When's the best time to see the sea of mist?
September through December, on cold, clear mornings — that's when the valley fog is thickest.
Can I camp overnight?
Yes, community operators rent camping spots for around 150 THB per person, with a simple breakfast available for an extra charge.
