Phu I-Loet is a 620-metre viewpoint above Ban Pak Man, in Dan Sai district on Loei’s western edge, known locally for a sea-of-mist sunrise that spans the Thai-Lao border. From the summit you can see the rooftops of Pak Man subdistrict on the Thai side and farmland climbing the hills on the Lao side, with the border itself running along the ridge line below. Entry is free.
The mist forms overnight in the valley and typically clears within an hour or two of sunrise, so timing is everything here — the window for the classic shot is short. Most visitors arrive in darkness or camp overnight on site specifically to be in position before first light; a small camping ground and a handful of basic bungalows are available, though space is limited and worth arranging ahead through the local district office rather than assuming availability. Once the sun clears the ridge, the view opens onto forested slopes, grassy outcrops, and scattered farmland stretching toward the border.
Beyond the sunrise, the summit area is a fairly small, walkable viewpoint rather than a hiking destination in its own right — most people come, watch the mist clear, and head back down within an hour or two. Wildflowers and grasses grow along the rocky edges of the summit, more noticeable in the cooler months than in the hot season. It’s a genuinely quiet spot: Loei’s own tourist trail runs through Chiang Khan and Phu Kradueng, and Phu I-Loet, tucked into Dan Sai near the border, gets a fraction of that traffic.
Insider Tip: Pack proper warm layers — pre-dawn temperatures at 620 metres in the cool season can drop into single digits Celsius, colder than most visitors expect from a Thailand trip.
Watch out: The final approach is a village road followed by a short uphill walk, with no lighting after dark — bring a torch if you’re arriving before sunrise rather than staying overnight.
Dan Sai district is also home to Phra That Si Song Rak and the Phi Ta Khon Museum, both about 25 km away near the district town — worth combining into the same trip if you’re already out this way. For wider trip planning, the Loei hub covers the rest of the province.
