Phu Phaeng Ma is the highest viewpoint inside Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park, rising to roughly 1,775 metres in Phitsanulok province’s Nakhon Thai district, right on the Loei border. The park has built a large timber-and-concrete platform at the point for the view: on a clear cool-season morning, a sea of mist fills the valleys below while the surrounding ridgelines break the surface like islands.

Experience

The final approach is a rough, rock-strewn track that vans and sedans can’t manage — a pickup truck or 4WD is the only practical way up, and local drivers around Nakhon Thai run trucks for visitors without their own transport. The wider national park is better known for its Cold War history — it was a stronghold of the Communist Party of Thailand into the early 1980s, with a museum and old base sites a short drive from this viewpoint — but Phu Phaeng Ma itself is purely about the panorama. From the platform, forested ridges run toward Loei in one direction and back over Nakhon Thai in the other.

Atmosphere & Timing

Sea-of-mist season runs roughly November through February, and the display is best in the hour or so after sunrise, before the sun burns it off. Outside those months, the same platform still gives a wide, quiet view over the park’s forest canopy — just without the fog. Mornings on the ridge run noticeably colder than Nakhon Thai town below; a jacket is worth packing even outside the cool season.

Insider Tip: Aim for a weekday in December or January if you can. The platform isn’t large, and weekend sunrise crowds during peak mist season can mean sharing the rail with a full tour group.

Watch out: The access track has no lighting and no barrier on the drop side in places. Arriving before dawn for sunrise means driving the roughest section of road in the dark — go slowly, and don’t attempt it in an ordinary rental car.

Practical

Entry runs on Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park’s standard admission — 200 THB for foreign adults (100 THB for children), 40 THB for Thai adults (20 THB for children) — with the gate open 08:00–16:30 daily. Phu Lom Lo, on the same national park’s Loei side, is the park’s other well-known viewpoint, known for its cherry blossom bloom rather than mist. There’s no accommodation right at Phu Phaeng Ma — the nearest campsite and bungalows sit at the main park headquarters area, reached by the same access road.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same Phu Phaeng Ma as the one near Khao Kho in Phetchabun?
No — this Phu Phaeng Ma sits inside Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park in Nakhon Thai district, Phitsanulok, right on the Loei border. A few travel-aggregator listings mislabel it as being near Khao Kho, Phetchabun, which is a separate mountain district with its own cluster of mist viewpoints roughly 90 kilometres away.
How much does it cost to visit?
Entry runs on Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park's standard admission — 200 THB for foreign adults (100 THB for children) and 40 THB for Thai adults (20 THB for children) — covering the whole park, not a separate charge for this viewpoint.
Do I need a 4WD or pickup truck to reach the viewpoint?
Yes for the final stretch. The access track is unpaved and rock-strewn, and vans or sedans can't manage the climb, so a pickup truck or 4WD is the practical way up — some visitors hire a local driver rather than risk a rental car on it.
When can I see the sea of mist?
Roughly November through February, in the cool season, with the best displays in the first hour or two after sunrise before it burns off. Outside those months the ridge is still a wide viewpoint, just without the fog below.
Can I camp at Phu Phaeng Ma?
Not right at the viewpoint itself. The nearest official campsite and bungalows are at the main Phu Hin Rong Kla National Park headquarters area, a separate stop reached by the same park road.
