Phra Phutthabat Bua Ban is a village temple in Ban Phue district, Udon Thani province, built around a Buddha footprint impression that Thailand’s Fine Arts Department registered as an ancient monument in 1935. The footprint itself is a stucco cast over the original mark in the rock — roughly 1.4 metres long — housed inside the temple’s ubosot (ordination hall) rather than left exposed to the weather. Entry is free, daily 08:30-16:30.

The footprint is the reason people come, and it draws a mix of local merit-makers and passing pilgrims rather than large tour groups. Visitors light incense, offer lotus flowers, and press gold leaf near the shrine in the same way they would at any working Isaan temple — this isn’t a polished heritage-park presentation, it’s a functioning village wat. Excavations around the site have also turned up Dvaravati-period sema (boundary) stones, which places Bua Ban within the same broader belt of ancient Buddhist stonework that runs through Ban Phue district.

That belt includes Phu Phra Bat Historical Park, the UNESCO World Heritage site of wind-carved boulders and prehistoric rock art roughly 13km northwest as the crow flies — but Bua Ban itself sits outside the park boundary and isn’t covered by its 100 THB entry fee. Don’t assume a Phu Phra Bat ticket gets you in here, or vice versa; they’re separate visits on separate roads.

Insider Tip: Go on a weekday morning if you want the shrine to yourself — weekends and Buddhist holy days (wan phra) bring local families making merit, which is worth seeing but means waiting your turn at the footprint.

Watch out: This is an active place of worship with no visitor centre or English signage. Cover your shoulders and knees, and remove your shoes before entering the ubosot.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this footprint an original carving in the rock, or a replica?
It's a stucco impression cast over the original footprint mark, registered as an ancient monument by Thailand's Fine Arts Department in 1935 — not a bare rock carving.
Is Phra Phutthabat Bua Ban part of the Phu Phra Bat UNESCO World Heritage site?
No. It's a separate temple roughly 13 km northwest of Phu Phra Bat Historical Park, in the same Ban Phue district but outside the World Heritage boundary and its entry fee.
Is there an entry fee?
No — Phra Phutthabat Bua Ban is free to visit, as is typical for a working village temple.
What are the opening hours?
Daily 08:30-16:30, though the temple grounds themselves are a village site rather than a gated attraction, so hours can flex around ceremonies.
How do I get there from Udon Thani city?
It's about 55km northwest via Ban Phue district — a car, taxi, or hired driver is more practical than public transport, since local bus routes don't run direct to the village.
