Pra Prong Dam

Pra Prong Dam is Sa Kaeo province’s largest reservoir, built across the Phra Prong stream in Watthana Nakhon district to store irrigation water for the surrounding farmland. It’s free to enter, open daily roughly 08:30-16:30, and sits about 35 km from Watthana Nakhon town (around 65 km from Sa Kaeo’s provincial capital).

The stream itself rises in the hills of Watthana Nakhon district, and the dam was built to capture that runoff for the fields downstream — flood control and irrigation storage, not a tourist-first design. What draws visitors now is what the reservoir attracts: it’s recognised as one of Thailand’s largest gathering sites for the oriental darter, a slim, long-necked waterbird known locally as nok ai-ngua that hunts by submerging its body and striking fish with a spear-like bill, surfacing only its snake-like neck — hence the nickname “snakebird.” Counts of 70 to 100 birds at once aren’t unusual here, and a bird-watching festival runs roughly May through August when migratory water birds concentrate on the water.

Beyond the birds, activities are straightforward: fishing along the banks, small-boat rides and rafting on the reservoir, and walking trails around the water’s edge for anyone more interested in scenery than wildlife lists. The dam structure itself is functional rather than scenic — concrete spillways and control gates rather than architectural flourishes — but the reservoir behind it opens into a wide expanse of water framed by low hills, quiet enough that a morning visit usually means more birds than people.

Insider Tip: Visit during the May-August bird festival window if darters and other migratory waterbirds are the draw — outside that period, the reservoir is quieter but the bird numbers thin out considerably.

Watch out: This is a genuine 35 km-plus drive from the nearest town with no public transport running directly to the dam — bring your own vehicle and fuel up before setting out, and don’t expect food vendors on site; pack water and snacks.

Combine the trip with Prasat Sadok Kok Thom, Sa Kaeo’s major Khmer temple ruin with its key historical inscription, or Huai Yang Reservoir elsewhere in the province. Both are reachable from Sa Kaeo, the eastern border province the dam serves.
